Adolescent Found Dead After False Accusations of Taking Ashes
A teenage youth was found dead only a few days after being wrongly blamed of taking the ashes of a dead baby during a break-in, an inquest has learned.
Tragic Finding
Kai Lloyd's mother and father discovered his remains in his room at his Flintshire residence on November 19th, 2021.
Untrue Allegations Begin
The investigation learned how his parent got a communication on November 8th, 2021 via online platforms, from a individual asking if Kai was her offspring. The message stated: "Tell him thanks for burgling my apartment."
In a testimony read to the proceedings, the mother said the individual had been in the media, claiming her baby's ashes had been stolen in a burglary - a allegation which was false.
Police Inquiry
An investigation report from police later determined the alleged break-in victim had "lied to police" and "evidence shows that said property was not stolen in the first place".
News coverage about the supposed taken ashes attracted online responses, and although the teenager was not named in the messages, his mother said individuals "understood it was him".
The "online posts were extremely distressing", she stated.
Mental Health Impact
She added that her son had been diagnosed with moderate attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and as part of that condition, other individuals' views really mattered to him.
"This must have affected him severely," she said, "particularly when this was untrue".
Kai was arrested at his residence, but no evidence was found. He was taken to a police station and later freed under investigation.
Police said they would be in contact, the inquest heard, but had not reached out to the family by the moment of his death.
Withdrawal and Anxiety
His mother said Kai "withdrew into himself" after the detention and "repeatedly inquired me whether I had heard anything from the authorities", because his ADHD meant sometimes "certain periods could seem like days".
When she spoke to him about the alleged burglary, she said her son told her he had gone into the house because the woman who resided there had said he could utilize the bathroom anytime he needed, but refuted taking anything.
Online Bullying
In a joint statement between her and her husband, the mother said her child was being bullied online after the accusations.
The inquest learned that a 19-year-old urged Kai to end his life.
She had no worries on the night before he passed away, explaining how she had heard him "laughing and teasing".
She described him as a "compassionate, loving" young man, and said her "family is completely shattered".
He had been "clearly hiding his worries", she said, adding that he could not stand to have anybody "have negative thoughts of him".
School Reaction
The inquest received testimony from educational personnel at the local High School.
On 8 November, she "heard some boys discussing that Kai had been arrested and that was the initial I learned".
"He informed me... he'd done nothing wrong," she added.
After the conversation, the staff member said she rang Kai's family landline and provided a message saying she had communicated to the student about the accusations.
The proceedings heard his parents said they did not receive that communication.
Official Finding
Senior investigator told the inquest he would await documents regarding what enhancements had been made to dealing with individuals with ADHD, before deciding whether he should make a avoidance of subsequent fatalities report.
Delivering a narrative conclusion, he stated: "Around November 8th, 2021, unsubstantiated accusations were made against Kai Benjamin Lloyd, a young individual.
"Likely untruths were subsequently exaggerated and exaggerated through the medium of social media.
"On 11 November, he was interviewed by the authorities and after his questioning he was released whilst investigations continued."
The official determined: "Exists no proof that the actions or omissions of any agency caused or added to his passing and although it was the outcome of a self-inflicted action it is impossible to discern his purpose."
