South American Rugby Union Success Stories Fuel Men's Global Tournament Qualification Race
While numerous fans in the UK focus on their clubs' early-season fortunes or discuss upcoming fall test matches, the battle for World Cup 2027 qualification continues unabated.
Chile's Historic Accomplishment
Chile earned their back-to-back appearance at the tournament with a sensational playoff victory against Samoa recently, leaving only a single place left to be claimed for Australia by 2027. At the same time, the Paraguayan side stunned Brazil by twenty points in the opening match of their playoff.
The second leg is scheduled this Saturday in Jacareí, close to São Paulo, as Brazil's men's team aims to follow their women's success and qualify for the first time.
Upcoming Qualification Clash
Regardless of Paraguay completes a shock overall victory, or Brazil recovers after head coach their coach's departure, the participants for next month's Dubai qualification tournament will be confirmed. Namibia, the Belgian squad, and the Samoan side are already confirmed their places for the Middle Eastern competition from 8-18 November.
Worldwide Qualification Updates
Many other teams have likewise earned their places. Hong Kong China achieved maiden World Cup entry after beating Korea 70-22 in July, and the Zimbabwean squad will return to the sport's premier tournament for the first occasion in over three decades by virtue of winning the African championship.
Chile's Growing Reputation
The knock-on effect of Chile's playoff success means that Los Condores will face Italy for the first time next month during the fall test series, replacing Samoa who must compete in Dubai.
The global governing body's CEO called Chile an "exciting and fast-emerging force" in confirming the forthcoming fixture in Genoa. As local rugby markets aim for larger crowds, Chilean rugby is thriving. A sell-out audience of over 20,000 saw the playoff victory in the coastal city, and manager Pablo Lemoine has guided the squad on an upward trajectory since his appointment in 2018.
Manager's Impressive Career
The fifty-year-old ex- Uruguayan forward has been making an impact for many years: signed by Bristol in the late 90s, he memorably broke through England defensive line to score at the 2003 global tournament.
His influence as head coach has been equally powerful: Chile have risen to 17th, their best ranking. During the last World Cup in Europe, they were defeated four times, conceding over two hundred points and scoring twenty-seven, including a heavy loss to England.
However, they confidently found the positive aspects, and after the tournament draw in Australia on December 3rd, Lemoine can start preparations in earnest. They faced Scotland previously, defeated by a significant margin before twenty-four thousand supporters, and although they were defeated over two legs by Uruguay in the initial qualifying round, they achieved a narrow win on the road in the Uruguayan capital.
Samoa's Qualifying Struggle
Samoa, in contrast, have participated in all World Cup since 1991, but are currently sitting in sixteenth place in the men's rankings. They were winless in the recent regional tournament, resulting in qualifying disappointment versus Chile, and the need to face nations such as Belgium brings further difficulty for the rugby-loving country.
Tournament Format Changes
Beyond individual nations' performances, it is important to consider how changed the expanded competition will appear in the next edition. For the first occasion, there will be a knockout stage with six groups of four teams rather than four pools of five teams. Pool-stage risk is much lower because the top four third-place teams will also advance.
Host Nation and Standings Consequences
The organizers, the Australian team, are currently ranked seventh in the global rankings, meaning they would miss out on top seeding and could face either the Springboks, the All Blacks, the Irish, France, England, or Argentina in Pool A. They may rise into the highest seeds during a busy November, however: the English team, Italy, the Irish squad, and France are their opponents, with a match against the Japanese team in the capital also scheduled for 25 October.
Wales, meanwhile, are teetering in twelfth place, with the Japanese side below, and the implications of dropping to thirteenth and into the third seeding group are potentially severe.
American Presence and Upcoming Events
Another fresh aspect for the next World Cup is the participation of five teams from the American continent: Argentina, the Uruguayan side, USA, Canada, and the Chilean squad – with Paraguay or Brazil possibly becoming the sixth. From the governing body's perspective, engagement from the Americas is beneficial, especially with the 2031 tournament set to be staged by the USA, and the selection process for the 2035 edition was initiated last month.
Immediate Focus
First things first, however. The second installment of Brazil versus Paraguay sets up a four-way qualifying contest, combined with a possible standings change throughout the European nations in the coming month. Regardless of the outcome, Chile's successful qualification for a second consecutive World Cup has already made them as a clear success story.
